💙🛋💫 Day 2️⃣1️⃣ of #SofaYoga with @cyogalab 🔀 #Mulabandhasana 💫🛋💙 Sometimes it’s not the hip rotation that limits us here, it’s that big toe bunion, or how hard the floor feels under the feet/kneecaps, so this is a friendlier version to practice. Rolling all the way on the toes so you end up sitting on the outer edges of the feet, is quite the rotation and, as much as we might try to avoid it, some of that happens at the knee. For some practitioners it feels destabilizing, others feel a nice release or don’t feel anything at all. Approach it with care, respecting your body’s boundaries and keep in mind some days are better than others (for me this is yo-yo pose, sometimes it feels amazing and I can roll without much trouble, other times I can’t even start the squat). After warming up those hips, climb on the sofa, squat on the toes, ‘fanning them out’ so the heels can press firmly against each other (that’ll give you more traction), point the knees out in opposite directions, always starting the opening at the hips, and place the heels in front of the pubic bone (or as much as you can). Notice if, at this point, the angle between the knees closes up and, if it does, back off slightly and make it wider again, always focusing on that hip rotation. If you feel it mostly/solely in the knee joint you should definitely back off to a point there’s no discomfort. If you make it to the point I’m showing in the pic, drop the knees towards the cushion, rest the palms there, sit up straight (sacrum could still be touching the back of the sofa) and press through the balls of the feet so the heels align right on top of them. Today I get the honor of hosting a class for a high school women's basketball team. Chicago is most def a baller city and as a multi sport athlete myself I can say with certainty many of my coaches were amazing but flexibility was NOT part of our practice or athletic lifestyle. After talking to the head coach of he was sure that he wanted the ladies to have something more intentional beyond the pre practice stretch. Student athletes have a lot of stress in their lives as teens and on their physical bodies. Many of them suffer later in life from injuries that began in their early years. I love working with teams because it further shows how independence is necessary but how support from each other is powerful. Practicing together you can learn a lot so I'm stoked. We aren't getting on the mats to just have better physical competitive bodies, they're getting on their mats to practice showing up for themselves. Chicago pride is unlike any other ❤️ As a Chicago girl, (YES, I was born here. I was raised in the suburbs though which I feel like makes me soft 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 but still!) CHICAGO 4EVR. So proud to call this city home 😊 Mike and I spent the night at my fav @chicagoideas event to date (@melsafford slayyyyy girl. Slay 🙌🏼) @lenawaithe @badassboz + @elainewelteroth - were TRANSFORMATIVE. Then got fully immersed in @chicagobulls x @nikechicago everything at Statement House Chi (@ericaslindsey09 + @kathyruda y’all nailed it🤛🏼👏🏼👏🏼) and then capped the night with impromptu whiskey drinks and brussels sprouts at @sohohouse. 💙🛋💫 Day 2️⃣0️⃣ Modification for #SofaYoga with @cyogalab 🔀 #Baby 👶 #Crow or #Bakasana 💫🛋💙 This may be the cutest arm balance but don't underestimate it. Baby crow puts to a test your core strength and balance. Start in a squat balancing on the balls of your feet, separate your knees hip-width. Walk your hands forward and place your forearms onto the mat parallel to each other. Rest your knees really close to the armpits. Keep the gaze in between your hands and begin to lean forward keeping the knees actively pressing into your arms. Continue to learn forward so your face gets closer to the ground. Once you lean forward, start to lift one foot up at a time and resist the weight of the legs on your forearms. Squeeze the belly in towards the spine and engage your abdominal muscles. Things are never so bad they can't be made worse. ~ Trying to find the silver lining in not having a busier schedule. I have more time to practice. More time to read. But also more time to worry. Should I just ride this wave of down time or should I pick up a 6th job? Times like these make me question if working for myself is worth it....for the moment I'm going to find strength and try to enjoy this free time.

What happens after taping 20 different videos of inversions and arm balances on the forearms? They peel and start to get bloody so, bandaids and extra protection are needed, hence the arm warmers… 😜 As with yesterday’s pose, you can use the sofa differently depending on what your main issues are: most people kick against it so, if they go over, the land will be smooth. After practicing up against the wall, the sofa should be your next stage, but make sure you can balance for a few seconds or else you’re going to be kicking and flipping over, time after time… better to use the wall until the kick is solid enough. If you turn 90 and practice perpendicular to the sofa, you can climb one leg on it, extend the other one like you were doing Transversal #Splits, then press up without (barely) any jump. This is a strengthening exercise and it requires better balancing skills too so, do it only when you start to feel very comfortable in this ‘asymmetrical’ #inversion. Another thing to try is to transition from regular #Pincha into this version, lifting one forearm and planting its palm down, then return back to Pincha to do the other side…. lots of fun assured to master this kind of balancing! Do the regular version if you prefer, modify as needed and keep going, #keeppracticing!!!
