The quickest way to identify lust is by asking yourself if you would still want to be with a person if you were not sexually, physically, or socially attracted to him or her. If social media did not constantly remind you of your singleness, would you date him/her? Your addiction to him/her is not love, but rather a reflection of your shallowness and lust. God did not create love to make us crazy or idolaters (Jonah 2:8). Honestly evaluate what Spirit in you is attracted to him/her. Demons and familiar spirits are real! Most people keep dating the same type of person because of their attraction to a negative spirit. The most common negative spiritual attraction we see is the attraction for "Bad Guys/ Bad Girls". With the entertainment industry illustrating "bad" as an attractive quality, it is easy to fall into the hype. However, a bad character is the perfect ingredient for a bad relationship. A bouchée attitude will eventually begin to annoy you (2 Timothy 2:22). Attraction of some sort initiates relationships. However, pertinent questions evaluate a fruitful match. Does he/she truly love Christ? Do they value what you value?
Love is a choice. Love is balanced.
Love is deeper than lust. It is not a social media marketing tool or a means to keep up with your friends. It is a gift from God. When the honeymoon stage is over, wisdom teaches us that real love is what keeps a marriage going. Marriage is about finding a partner you can do life with, and who can do life with you. Often times when we ask God for a spouse, we think he hasn't heard our prayer because Mr. Right does not pop around the corner. In actuality, God often answers our prayers by showing us how to be a spouse. With all the marriage "how to" books out there it is so easy to forget to work on yourself. We forget the importance of the preparation stage. Ask yourself... is God trying to prepare me for something real? Am I too blinded by my own rationality and lust? Do i truly know what real love is? Am I marriage material. It takes a mature person to admit they don't know what love is. It takes an even maturer person to understand that they are not ready.
