Day 1 on the Sleep Well EP and we are having a blaaaaast making some bangers.
As I did yesterday, I'm trying out the front of kit overhead mic positions with my Coles again. Because this kit set up has two crashes, I spent a bit of time adjusting the position to capture each crash at a balanced volume, while keeping the kick and snare centred.
I really like this microphone position for the smooth top end on the cymbals and the detail it captures in the kick and snare. There is a slight trade off however, because both microphones are aiming at the snare drum (so I can capture the cymbals off axis) the stereo image isn't quite as wide or focused as the traditional overhead position. For example, both microphones pick up quite a bit of hihat. But there's something about the tonality of the whole thing that I really really like, the lack of width allows for more space in the sides for hard panned guitars to sit unobstructed, and the way the different cymbal hits flow from one side to another just feels really good to listen to.
