A steel cutout of a steelworker with smokestacks behind him adorning the top of a street sign as a homage to the massive United States Steel Homestead Works and the thousands of jobs it provided in Homestead, Pa.
When US Steel's Homestead Works was shuttered in 1986 due to the severe downturn in the domestic steel industry, the city of Homestead collapsed from the loss of jobs and the industrial tax base.
Now over 30 years later, there is a massive complex of retail, residential, and office spaces on the former mill site, but most of the jobs there are not equivalent to the high-paying ones the mill workers had.
And the main street in Homestead, just two blocks away across the railroad tracks, is still blight-ridden with most of the buildings vacant and decaying.
