after 21 days of a hundred plus kilometres per day in the #vueltaespaña
(Tour of Spain). Arguably the toughest, least respected of professional athletes for the effort put out: The climbing specialist road cyclist. Some have been known to chug carbonated water before bed so they can go to sleep feeling full, as weight equals slow when going uphill. They're human Formula 1 race cars, mixed with alpine mountaineers. I'm not sure I how got into following road bike racing as a kid, cause I didn't seek it out, it found me. I think there was a push to make the sport popular in North America in the late 80s/early 90s. The free cycling magazines stocked at my local #VancouverPublicLibrary
helped. I later discovered mtn biking as a teen via friends, and never got that into road biking or racing, thankfully. It's brutal. Regardless of the controversies, the drugs, the sponsorship scandals, I'll follow this sport for many more years. These athletes will never be more famous than the least famous MMA fighter. And in my books, they are tougher, at least mentally.
